Ensuring a good milk supply
The alert baby who suckles vigorously and consistently within the first half hour after birth stimulates production of prolactin, the key hormone. This encourages a long-term, copious supple of milk. Breast feeding on demand should be promoted from delivery. Supplementary feeds / water feeds samples should be actively discouraged, unless prescribed for ill or premature infants. The only major contraindication to breast feeding in HIV infections in the mother, and the use of certain drugs. The W.H.O accepted that the majority of women can breast feed (97%). Therefore in the majority of these cases there is no known physiological reason preventing breast feeding. |
