Breastfeeding Support for New Mums in Auckland
Jul 17, 2026
Breastfeeding is one of the most natural things in the world — and also, for many mums, one of the hardest things to get right in those first few weeks. If you’re preparing to breastfeed, or you’re already in the thick of it and struggling, you are not alone, and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.
With over 30 years as a Registered Midwife and IBCLC, I’ve supported more than 8,000 families through pregnancy, birth, and those early feeding days. Here’s what I want every Auckland mum to know.
HolisticBaby & Birthcare Auckland — Support at Every Stage
Through our partnership with Birthcare Auckland, HolisticBaby offers complete, midwife-led support across pregnancy, birth, and beyond:
- Antenatal Classes — evidence-based preparation for labour, birth, breastfeeding, and taking baby home.
- Breastfeeding Support & Lactation Clinic — one-on-one, hands-on help through our Partnership Private Lactation service, available right at Birthcare, including access to the Sanctuary premium rooms for extra comfort and privacy.
- Mothers Group — free, ongoing support after you go home, covering feeding, fussy baby behaviour, sleep, postnatal recovery, and mood.
This means real support doesn’t stop when you leave the birthing suite — it continues with you, every step of the way.
Breastfeeding Doesn’t Always Come Naturally — And That’s Okay
One of the biggest myths about breastfeeding is that it should just “click” once baby arrives. In reality, latch, positioning, milk supply, and timing are all skills that take practice — for both you and your baby. Preparing before birth, through evidence-based antenatal classes, makes a real difference to how confident you feel in those first days.
Common Challenges in the Early Weeks
Latch difficulties — often the root cause of pain, cracked nipples, or a baby who seems unsettled at the breast.
- Low milk supply concerns — sometimes perceived, sometimes real, and always worth assessing properly rather than guessing.
- Engorgement and blocked ducts —can be common in the first fortnight due to more medical birth intervention or feeding choices and takes time for supply to regulate.
- Fussy or unsettled feeding behaviour — which is exactly why I run a dedicated Fussy Baby Clinic.
None of these mean you’re doing something wrong. They mean you need the right support, early.
Support Available at Birthcare Auckland
I’m proud to partner with Birthcare Auckland to bring midwife-led, IBCLC breastfeeding support directly into the postnatal space where mums are already recovering. This means you don’t need to wait until you’re home and exhausted to get help — support is there from day one.
Ongoing Support After You Go Home
Breastfeeding support shouldn’t stop the moment you leave Birthcare. That’s why I’ve launched a free Mothers Support Group, giving mums a reason to come back to Birthcare for ongoing help with feeding, fussy baby behaviour, sleep, postnatal recovery, and mood — in a warm, no-pressure group setting with other mums going through the same thing.
Prepare Before Baby Arrives
The best time to learn about breastfeeding is before you’re sleep-deprived and doing it in real time. HolisticBaby’s Antenatal Classes cover breastfeeding preparation in depth, alongside labour, birth, and taking baby home — so you walk into those early weeks with real, practical confidence.
