Understanding the Role of Birth Partners
Sep 28, 2026
A guide for expectant parents preparing for birth together, from Cathy McCormick, midwife, IBCLC and founder of HolisticBaby.
Every pregnant woman trains for the big day, often without even realising it.
From the moment she finds out she's pregnant, something quietly begins. She starts paying attention to her body, her feelings, her fears and her hopes. She may not call it preparation, but that's exactly what it is.
Antenatal classes simply give that preparation a name, and a direction.
"A good antenatal class encourages her to get to know herself first. Who are you already? What have you been through in life, and what kind of support was actually useful to you in moments of stress?"
Getting to Know Yourself
Are you someone who needs a cheerleader in your corner, rallying you forward? Or do you find more comfort in a quiet presence, a steady hand, a calm nod that said I've got you?
These aren't small questions. They're the foundation of how she wants to feel on the biggest day of her life.
She starts wondering. She starts talking. Slowly, she begins gathering her team around her: her LMC, midwife or obstetrician, family and friends. She shares her ideas and gets back a mix of opinions, well-meaning advice, and the occasional response that doesn't quite fit. She listens, considers, and keeps building her picture of what she needs.
Her partner doesn't need to be strong or heroic.
They need to be her voice.
Your Partner Is Your Inner Voice
Through all of it, her partner is her greatest advocate. Not a hero, but something far more important. They become her inner voice when she can no longer find the words. They can be brave when she can't. They can speak when she is unable.
When labour takes over and she goes deep within herself, her partner becomes the bridge between her and everyone else in the room. They work alongside her LMC to ensure that no matter what birth journey unfolds, she always feels like the most important person in the room.
That is a different kind of strength. Quiet, steady and powerful. Not performance, but presence.
The question is: are they ready? Does her partner truly know her hopes and dreams for birth and beyond? Not just the practical preferences, but the deeper ones. How she wants to feel. What she needs when things get intense. Whose voice she needs to hear, and what she needs it to say.

How HolisticBaby Supports Both of You
This is exactly what HolisticBaby Antenatal Classes help birth partners discover. Most partners walk in wanting to help and not knowing how, not because they don't care, but because no one has ever asked them to think about it this deeply before.
In Cathy's classes, birth partners aren't just given a checklist. They're invited into a real conversation about the woman beside them: her fears, her strength, and what it truly means to show up for her.
When labour gets big, she goes inward. She doesn't want to teach. She doesn't want to manage. She just wants to feel held by someone who already knows what she needs, because they took the time to find out.
That is something you can prepare for. And it starts here.
